There are many reasons why people struggle to make friends. Here are a few:

Insecurity

Selfishness

Pride

An Introvert Personality

Fear of People

Overwhelming and dominate personality

Depression

But whatever the problem is, it needs to be addressed and conquered. You will never have fulfillment in life that you want unless you can achieve strong relationships.

Experiencing things with others is often more enjoyable than experiencing them alone. It is your relationships that add depth to your experiences, gives meaning to your actions, and provides hope for tomorrow.

Friendship is not a separate relationship of its own. But rather, it is the highest evolution of any particular relationship. When neighbors become friends, when employees become friends, when mates become friends, when children become friends, then you will have entered a whole new depth to your relationships.

But how do you make friends?

YOU MUST BE WILLING TO BE FRIENDLY.

This seems like a no-brainer, but, in fact, many people miss this essential point. Don’t wait for someone to befriend you…go and befriend them. Who wants to hang around someone who is unfriendly? No one.

Being friendly means that you take an interest in someone else. Those of you who are waiting for the masses to discover your worthiness are going to be continually disappointed. Take an interest in other people…their needs, their desires, their wants, their hopes and dreams. You’ll find that they return the favor.

Two very rich men lived in a small community. One kept to himself and was a penny pincher. He was never charitable, and never considerate of others. It was his money, he had made it, and no one was taking it from him. The other gave, was very generous, and considerate. No one coming to his house was turned away.

Then a hurricane ripped through the town and succeeded in destroying both of the rich men’s houses. They were completely ruined. Guess which one the townsfolk turned out to help? The friendly one, of course.

It is always difficult to make friends when you are focused on yourself. People are naturally repulsed by a selfish and self-centered person.

There is another group of people that needs to heed this advice: those of you who are recluses, or an introvert, or the quiet type. These in of themselves are not bad, but they will hinder your ability to make friends. When you don’t get involved with other people’s lives they will assume that you want to be left alone, and so they will leave you alone believing that is what you want. You, in turn, get upset because you think that people don’t like you. Well, sweetheart (or big fellow), you are your own worst enemy. Get out there and be friendly!

Many people who are in this category find themselves in a quandary. They want friends, but they are too afraid to introduce themselves, to get involved, and then to make matters worse, others think that they want to be alone, and so leave them alone. It’s a no win situation.

Be friendly. Here are some tips:

Try to meet someone else’s needs. Do it in a fun and amusing way.

Don’t demand, expect, or hint at repayment for a kind deed.

Be open. Don’t be afraid to be hurt. I’d rather love and be hurt than to never love at all.

Don’t dominate a situation that you aren’t expected to be the leader. Just sit back and interact. You don’t have to control the conversation or the activity, or have things done a certain way (even if yours is the better one). Just be a participant.

Laugh. Laugh at yourself. Poke fun at yourself. People feel at ease around others who don’t take themselves too seriously.

Talk about ideas.

Weak Minds Talk About People
Average Minds Talk About Things
Strong Minds Talk About Ideas
- Dr. Jack Hyles

JOIN IN COMMON GOALS

Strive together. Often the strongest bonds are formed by working together. If you think back to a ball team that you once played on, you’ll recall the strong bonds that were formed when you won and lost as a team.

One of the closest friends I ever had was the result of a project that we both worked on for over 3 years. It was a book. We co-authored it (it never got published), but for years, we lived and breathed that book, wrote over 160,000 words, fought over it, brainstormed together, and so forth. We formed a bond that was very strong.

Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Volunteer to help someone build an addition to their house, join with them in a hobby, team together to make, build, or produce something. Get involved with common goals.

In counseling, I often find that many married couples struggle because they have no common goals that they are striving together on—nothing to dream about, nothing to hope about together, nothing to strive for together.

Don’t be a spectator to life. Jump on in.

YOU MUST BE WILLING TO LOSE…TO GAIN.

Friendship is the willingness to make sacrifices.

People who make sacrifices for others are never friendless!

Sometimes you must sacrifice in order to gain friends. Again, thinking of yourself is the best way to go friendless in life. Here are a list of things you may need to sacrifice in order to make friends:

Your fears

Your time

Your money

Your attention

Your love

Your work

Making friends can be a simple process if you’re willing to put others ahead of yourself. In turn, this will be reciprocated back to you. You could say it is a natural law, that if you do these three things you’ll make friends.

PEOPLE DON’T CARE HOW MUCH YOU KNOW UNTIL THEY KNOW HOW MUCH YOU CARE!

“It was obvious that Samuel had a big idea that reached far, by jungle standards. Still, the idea of not having to do everything for himself was appealing. Richard admitted. The possibilities were pretty huge. Richard excused himself, scratched his head, and went home to think about it.”

The above paragraph is an excerpt from the Dawn of Sam Volume 2, written by Cassandra Hall, a contributing editor with RentAGhostWriter.Com. The Dawn of Sam is a comical satire that provides insight into the beginning of outsourcing written work.

How many times have you heard someone complain about having to write a paper, an article, or a speech? Writing “dread” is experienced by thousands of people each and every day around the globe. Many people feel as if they lack the necessary skills to write a well documented report or an interesting Letter to the Editor or attention grabbing content for a personal or business website.

For this very reason outsourcing written work has become increasingly popular. Now, people can find writers, who love what they do, to write anything from web content to press releases. This is a happy situation between the writer and the non-writer.
Thinking along these lines contributing editor, Cassandra Hall, began to write her brainchild The Dawn of Sam.

This is a comical look into the roots of outsourcing written work. Cassandra Hall is an experienced writer who writes newsletters, speeches, lyrics, product reviews and much more. She is a woman who is able to handle many things from various writing projects to checking on goats and chickens after a violent summer storm. To learn more about Cassandra Hall visit the Contributing Editor’s page.

The Dawn of Sam has a lovable main character named Samuel. Samuel begins to figure out that it is easy to trade things in order to get something you need for example a loincloth. If you are confused by the loincloth you have to read The Dawn of Sam: rentaghostwriter.com/blog/category/the-dawn-of-sam-satire.

Take a few moments during the day to read the newest volume of The Dawn of Sam. This is a great way to pass a few enjoyable moments. Take a break from writing, relax and step into Samuel’s life. The Dawn of Sam will have you laughing, thinking and smiling at the way thoughts and ideas unravel in Samuel’s ever-expanding mind.

“This was very upsetting to Samuel! Ruby was considering outsourcing her food acquisition needs to other providers. Was that fair? Was it possible? Fleeting notions of ‘contract’ and ‘legally binding’ flitted through Sam’s head and were gone before he could form solid ideas around them.” Excerpt from The Dawn of Sam Volume 5

Samuel looked to the west as he scraped a sticky, suspicious something from the bottom of his foot. (Was that legs on it?) It was his fourth day traveling with Ruby and the mountain didn’t appear to be any closer at all. Samuel had been told once that the mountain and the moon stayed still. They only appeared to move with you. But, since Samuel hadn’t had any opportunity to verify this information, for all he was concerned, the mountain might very well be running away from him. He didn’t want to lose face, though. He was prepared to carry on toward the mountain until either they caught up to it, or Ruby began to get suspicious. Should that happen, Samuel had almost made up his mind to see that she had an unfortunate accident involving some large wild beasts if that became necessary so save himself from some embarrassment.

“I’m hungry,” Ruby interrupted his reverie.

“Nothing! Oh! What was that?” Samuel asked, shaking his head.

“I’m hungry. I’ve done what you asked, haven’t I? And you haven’t killed anything in two days.”

Samuel kept quiet. He had learned early on that nothing was almost always the right thing to say. And he really had no room to argue. He had outsourced all his tailoring needs to Ruby, who was a right brilliant seamstress. She required food in payment. Besides, the whole thing had been his idea. There was nothing for it but to go out and search for food.

With a grunt and a nod, Samuel donned a fetching off-the-shoulder tunic that Ruby had made him. It was perfect for hunting and covered him all the way to his mid thigh. After living his entire life in nothing but a loin cloth, the garb was comfortingly heavy and made Samuel feel like a chieftain! He snatched up a spear and headed toward the brushy undergrowth where surely something edible was growing.

After half an hour Samuel returned to the camp site with two brown, furry rodents and a large brown snake. Snake was not his favorite thing to eat, but it was alright with wild herbs. Ruby had a fire going. She skinned the animals like she’d done it often and tossed them, innards and all, onto the fire keeping their skins out for her own mysterious purposes.

As she stood, Samuel noticed a protrusion on her abdomen. Thoughtlessly, he patted it and recoiled when Ruby slapped his hand.

“What’s the matter with you?” She asked, angrily.

“What is that thing on your apron?” Samuel asked.

“It’s a pouch. I keep my things in it.”

“What things?”

“Oh, things. Girl things.”

“Let me see,” Sam said. He examined Ruby’s apron, amid her protests and stuck his hand into the pouch to find that it held a few lady-sized tools.

“That’s bloody remarkable!” Samuel exclaimed. “You must tell the Fellows at the College!”

“I probably will. But I was thinking of making some for the inhabitants of the village there to the north. Perhaps I can offer them clothes and pouches in exchange for more food and provisions for our journey.”

This was very upsetting to Samuel! Ruby was considering outsourcing her food acquisition needs to other providers. Was that fair? Was it possible? Fleeting notions of ‘contract’ and ‘legally binding’ flitted through Sam’s head and were gone before he could form solid ideas around them. This just wasn’t right! Samuel hadn’t planned for this new element–this competition. As he looked to the north and saw scattered plumes of smoke that indicated a village, Sam wondered what the Fellows would make of this new development.

Samuel awoke to a dirty toe poking him in the ribs.

“Ruby?” He guessed correctly.

“I’m hungry,” she told him. “And you’re filthy. What have you been doing? I thought you were ready to go.”

“Well, I…”

Samuel looked around as he sat up. The puddle of drool and the sun rising up in the east told him that he’d fallen asleep waiting for Ruby to return.

“You took all night to get ready?” he asked.

“Me?! Look at you! I’ve been busy all night packing and sewing and just–LOOK at you! You been sleeping all night, haven’t you? And you’re filthy. Well, I’m just not going anywhere with you looking like that.” Ruby sat down on a rock, wearing an extremely pouty expression.

Samuel looked at a large stack of neatly folded animal skins and wondered who was supposed to carry all of those. By the size of Ruby’s lower lip, he decided this wasn’t the best time to ask.

“Err.. I’ll be back,” Samuel said as he took off toward the stream.

A good scrubbing and many compromises later, Samuel and Ruby were packed up with skins and headed west. East of them was gnawing on a roasted rabbit leg.

“So, tell me about this discover, Sam,” Ruby coaxed. “You still haven’t showed me it. I didn’t even see you pack it.”

“Well, it’s not something you can see, Ruby,” Sam told her. “It’s giving people something so they will do something for you. Or, it could work the other way round. You might do something for someone else so they will give you something.”

“Why would you do that?” Ruby wanted to know.

“There’s lot of reasons. Maybe you don’t like doing everything. Maybe you don’t have time. Or, maybe someone’s really good at something and you’re not. Then, you could get something done better than you can do it yourself.”

“You mean like, when I gave you that loincloth and you gave me a rabbit? ‘Cause you really have no skills whatever with the skins, m’friend,” Ruby looked at Samuel’s tired old loin cloth with distaste.

“Exactly like that!” Finally! Someone was getting it. “I think the Fellows will see that this is a great discovery!”

“I’m really good with skins,” Ruby said, thoughtfully. “What’re you good at?”

“I’m good at hunting.”

“Hunting?!” Ruby sounded more incredulous than she had meant to let on.

“I really am! Why is it that everyone thinks I can’t do anything? I’ve just made the greatest discovery that’s ever been discovered in my lifetime and everyone thinks I can’t do anything.” Samuel slumped forward and dragged his feet as they walked on. Ruby continued beside him in silence.

“Looking out for resources from elsewhere,” Ruby said aloud.

“You remembered,” Samuel beamed.

“It’s not very catchy.”

He glowered. “What would you call it, then?”

Many more moments of silence followed.

“It’s just too long,” Ruby said, as if to herself.

Another long silence ensued. Samuel turned to look at Ruby and saw her staring into the distance as they walked. Her lips moved silently as if she were mouthing the words to song.

“What are you doing?” He asked. He’d never seen anyone do that before. It was rather unnerving.

“Outsourcing,” Ruby replied.

“What kind of nonsense is that?” Samuel wanted to know.

“That’s what you should call it. ‘Outsourcing.’ It’s short. It’s memorable. It’s… catchy.”

“Outsourcing,” Samuel repeated. Then, he looked ahead into the distance and mouthed the word several times silently. It was a full minute before he realized what he was doing.

“It’s going to change the world,” He told his companion.

“Mmm,” she answered, absentmindedly. “It may.”

My favorite way to tell a story is first person, as it can be delicious to let that person be you, as you write your story. I am using some examples from stories that I have written elsewhere.

“I grow weary already in telling this much, and I have only just begun. I feel as though I start one place and end somewhere else, and what comes between makes little sense. Wake me if I doze. It is so pleasant to sit down, and I am weary with work.”

What has this person told us about herself? First, we know that this person is telling us the story, rather than writing it down. She is tired, but she likes to talk. We get the sense that she might talk fo hours. The author must bear in mind that everything written on the page must be as though this person were sitting in front of us, letting her story ramble on where it will, to a point. This story teller cannot tell you about anything she did not see, or that someone did not tell her, although she could tell you what she thinks other people may have done. Throughout her narrative, we would be more likely to learn about her and her opinions of the world, than we would about the people she describes, for everything she says is colored by what she believes.

Susan Howatch has written a number of novels in first person, often devoting a section, or series of chapters to one character’s impressions, and the next section to another character’s impressions.

Here is an opening paragraph written in omniscient style.

“Kiesha Williams was sweating hard, but she felt herself moving with the fluidity and grace of a cat. For years, she had been told, “Black girls don’t dance ballet,” and her mama really couldn’t afford the lessons. Now, the instructor at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where she had been a student all through high school, had nothing but praise for her.”

This is a style that is used in the majority of books now published. The writer can describe his protagonist as though he is inside that person’s head. But because the writer is that nebulous other, capable of seeing into all his characters’ souls, omniscient is extremely versatile, permitting the author to move at will from character to another, displaying each of their innermost thoughts, as he describes a scene.

Strictly speaking, second person is seldom used. Uncle Remus’ Br’er Rabbit stories were written in this fashion. The story teller is sitting in front of you speaking of what he heard about other people, or in this case, animals. In our culture, we do not often entertain each other with imaginary stories, unless we count certain forms of gossip, but I’m not going there… So, stories written in that style have fallen out of vogue, though it is popular among some children’s writers.
Next week, I will speak of opening scenes.

Recently I came across an article online by the Washington Post telling the story of one mother’s upset that her child was subjected to hearing the Pledge of Allegiance spoken in Spanish at her school in Fredrick’s County, Maryland. The mother called the act of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish as: “offensive and disrespectful to our country.” [1] The story is two years old but it is not unique nor is it an isolated incident. According to WBTV in January of this year at the Charlotte Mecklenberg school’s mid year graduation ceremony, the Pledge was recited first in English and then in Spanish. During the Spanish version of the Pledge it was reported that: “Many people sat down while it was read in Spanish and did not clap.”[2] As an immigrant in this great land called America, I find myself disturbed by such articles and the current narrow perspective of many Americans towards their diverse and growing immigrant population. The current defensiveness appears bred on ignorance and a lack of understanding of America’s founding principals. Many are quick to forget that their families came to this country speaking a host of languages including French, German, Italian, and Dutch (to name just a few). It was only due to the dominating British influence, the same influence fought against in the War of Independence, that the use of English became so prevalent. So is reciting the Pledge in another language besides English an insult to this country or is it rather an insult to this country that the Pledge is often only recited in English?

According to the Census Bureau there are just over 300 million people residing in this country.[3]As of the 2000 Census 71.6% are classified as ‘White non Hispanic’,12.8% are classified as ‘Black’, 4.4% are classified as Asian or Pacific Islanders, 0.9 % are classified as American Indian, Eskimo, or Aleut, and 11.3% are of Hispanic origin.[4] These numbers and categories of diversity however inaccurate and ethnically confused as they may be, do tell us that America is a community of many nationalities, cultures, and opinions and currently the majority are still of European descent. 2000 Census statistics show that 82.1% of American households speak English in their own home. That means 17.9% (or 14 million households) speaks in a language other than English.[5]

Many of us have heard on numerous occasions that English is the language of America. And yet, contrary to this popular assumption, in America, there is NO official language. Is that because this is America and representatives of all nations are welcome here? Or is it rather that those of European descent (the offspring of generations of immigrants) assume their majority will last forever and there is no reason to claim English as our official language?

If we look into the early history of America, we find reports of the “journals and official documents” of the Continental Congress being reported in both German and French.[6] During the 19th century, many states printed official documents in a host of European languages in order to communicate policy to their diverse inhabitants.[7] In 1981, a constitutional amendment was proposed to make English the official language of America but this proposal never came to a congressional vote.[8] There have been numerous attempts to legislate English as the official national language, but all have so far failed.

Current estimates contend that over 311 languages are spoken by America’s citizens. And: “Of these, 162 are indigenous, and 149 are immigrant languages. An indigenous or autochthonous language is a language that is native to a region and spoken by indigenous peoples.”[9] And yet people become upset and defended when one of those many languages is utilized to express the liberty and unification of this country.

Of course, it is easier to print official documents in one language but that does not mean it is disrespectful to what America represents to translate these documents into the languages of the many peoples of this land in order that assimilation and unification can occur. I am not an American but the Constitution of this country, whose words first brought me to these shores, hangs with hope on the wall of my study. How can one have tears of pride in their eyes as they read the Constitution if they are unable to read it? How can one express respect for the Pledge of Allegiance if they do not have the tools to understand it? Is it not a better representation of America’s principles when all the languages of its residents are embraced? Why are so many in fear of the introduction of another language into our daily lives?

When I was child growing up in rural England, it was compulsory for every student to begin learning a second language at age 11. I never had any problem with this requirement as it seemed both logical and interesting to me to learn the language of our neighbors, France and Germany. I will be eternally grateful to my teachers for introducing me to both languages and cultures. My language studies have broadened both my perspective and my ability to communicate in a multicultural world. And although forever the language of Shakespeare will haunt my soul, the ability to view the French Revolution through Voltaire’s eyes or to read Kant in the original is a gift I shall always cherish. So why are so American parents up in arms at the fact their children are learning a few words of Spanish?

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) explains on their website the advantages a child has by beginning foreign language studies at an early age:

· Has a positive effect on intellectual growth.

· Enriches and enhances a child’s mental development.

· Leaves students with more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language, and a better ear for listening.

· Improves a child’s understanding of his/her native language.

· Gives a child the ability to communicate with people s/he would otherwise not have the chance to know.

· Opens the door to other cultures and helps a child understand and appreciate people from other countries.

· Gives a student a head start in language requirements for college.

· Increases job opportunities in many careers where knowing another language is a real asset.[10]

So it seems the introduction of another language into the lives of America’s children has only positive effects and helps prepare them for the world they will encounter as adults. Learning a second language helps one to understand their first language better. In fact, the ACTFL also reported that: “Graduating high school seniors with two or more years of foreign language study showed significant superiority in performance on achievement tests in English when compared with nonforeign [SIC] language students.”[11]

The Census Bureau projects that by 2050, the ‘white’ majority will fall from 71.6% to 52.5% of the U.S. population.[12] It would be a fair prediction to say this number will continue to decrease. One day, not far in America’s future, there could be a time when the majority becomes the minority and has to fight for the Pledge of Allegiance to be spoken in English so that ‘we’ can relate to the articles of liberty in this country.

So is there a solution to this argument regarding the speaking of the Pledge of Allegiance in other languages besides English? Of course there is. In order for America’s founding principals to represent the people the Pledge should be available to us in every language spoken by every person in this beautifully diverse country. America’s students, whether of European, Asian, African, or Native descent should have the opportunity to hear these words in the languages of their culture; that is, in the languages of the American culture. The children of this nation should have the opportunities to know their classmates and their neighbors better. Perhaps then our neighbors and newer residents would want to understand our predominant language as they would feel included, welcomed, wanted.

So it seems to me, everyone who sits down during the Pledge of Allegiance just because it is spoken in another language stands against American ideals. Every person who states that there are too many immigrants in this country should take a second look at their family tree. And every person in this country who believes English is the language of this country should tell that to the Native Americans.

It’s time to start embracing what this unique land of immigrants really stands for; that is diversity, equality, opportunity, and freedom. We must give our children and our children’s children the tools to thrive in America’s future. So let’s accept reality, stop pledging ignorance, and start pledging American ideals.
